I’m not a fan of providing tips for spring refresh home tips because many of these “tips” turn out to be renovation tips that take months to complete and burn a hole in your wallet. I’m more of a let’s do this quickly so I can actually freshen the space, not renovate it.
I like to refresh my space on the weekend or plan ahead by making a few purchases. Then, after enjoying the fresh air and a cup of coffee with a cruller, I implement all the changes on a Saturday. No stress, no frills, no fuss. These tips are practical and simple ideas to kick the winter doldrums out of the house and refresh your home before dinner.
Change the sheets or comforterÂ

Change out those warm linens for cooler ones. Get satin or a thin cotton to stay cool at night. Going for white linens because they always feel like a vacation, and I find them easy to clean. Just wash them with mild detergent, use vinegar for the rinse cycle (it helps freshen the fabric and washer), and hang them in the sun to brighten them up. It’s better than bleach!Â
Hang some new sheer drapery

Let in the light! I don’t like blackout drapery for my bedroom because it messes with my circadian rhythm- if you work at night, go for the blackout! Use a heavier shade in the winter to keep your bedroom warm and cozy. I like sheers in the Spring (and all year) because they light up my room with a soft glow and help keep my sleep on track.Â
Add some fresh flowers or plants

You may have plants already, so give a nice trim or re-pot them. But if you don’t have plants, add a few. It makes the home feel fresh and inviting; plants are good for us! Use spider plants, pothos, or succulents. They are easy to take care of. Add one vase of fresh flowers from the grocery store if you don’t have time to take care of plants. Nothing fancy; some early spring flowers, like hellebores or daffodils will do and hopefully we see them soon.Â
Clean the windows

Cleaning the windows is the ultimate refresh for your home. We always put this off, but Spring is the best time to do it. The windows get so dirty in the winter. Use steam cleaners, a vacuum, or a rag with a good glass cleaner. Don’t use blue or green tinted cleaner because it will stain everything that’s not glass. I’ve found success with baby wipes for the sills. However you clean it, do it, and you’ll be happy you did.Â
Change out the light bulbs

I know many of us struggle with the color temperature of our bulbs. Is daylight best? What about the yellow ones? Daylights are way too blue and look intense. Daylight bulbs are 5,000K, which looks very white inside the home. And some people find it too bright.
The best temperature for every light is 2,700k because it’s similar to the old halogen bulb color. It’s warm but not yellow. Some people recommend different temperatures for different rooms. I’m not too fond of this idea, like daylight for home offices or bathrooms. I don’t like this because, have you ever worked in an office? The lighting is awful! So change out those bulbs and make your bedroom, or house, for that matter, look less like a corporate office and more like a home.
Pillow Covers

If you’ve decorated for Christmas or for the winter, one of the easiest ways to freshen a space is to add new pillows or pillow covers. I’m a big fan of pillow covers; get a down pillow and change out the cover. You can wash them easily. Try sophisticated florals, vintage patterns, stripes, or colorful solids for your living room, bedroom, or entryway bench. These new covers make a big difference in the space.
Natural scented candle

Freshen the space with a natural scented candle. And by natural, I mean things that exist in nature, not birthday cake or buttered popcorn. But that doesn’t mean some natural scented candles can’t get a little crazy; some florals are intense and don’t necessarily smell like the floral or aren’t subtle. I’m a fan of lavender or lilac. Both are some of the first flowers to bloom, smell amazing and aren’t an overwhelming and artificial smell.
