Planning the layout of a bedroom can be tricky because many bedrooms are too small or have lots of windows, which is great but makes it a little difficult to organize the space. The layout of the room is important for its function. You want to have the bedroom work well with how you live and not be a pain to relax or organize.
There are better layouts than others, though. It can be challenging if you have a small room, but most rooms can have an efficient and spacious layout. There’s some basic “rules” you can follow to get started on your bedroom layout.
Orient the bed first

If you can, orient the bed so it faces the door. I know this isn’t always possible but it looks the best when you enter the room. Seeing the bed with comfy bedding, two nightstands, and lamps look better than looking at a hamper and side of a dresser.
It’s also suitable for security reasons; you can see who enters the door or if something is happening outside it (like kids sneaking downstairs). It also helps just with traffic flow, if you or the kids are sick or whatever else you can get to the door without having to walk around the bed.
Think about the view

Does your room have a view? Can you see it from the bed? If you can’t orient the bed towards the door, focus on a view instead. That way, you can see nice views daily. You may have two walls you can orient the bed on while still facing the door, so pick the one that has the best view.
If you can’t orient your bed towards the door, focus the seating area or a vanity towards the view. And make sure whatever wall you choose has enough outlets near the bed.
If you don’t have a nice view, paint the walls a neutral or dramatic color and focus on a specific style so the style of the room will speak for itself. Choose quality materials to complete the look.
Create seating

It’s nice when a bedroom has seating, so add a small, comfy chair. If you have a small bedroom, put a small bench or chair or forgo the seating. Placing too much furniture in a small room doesn’t leave room for walking around.
If you have a large bedroom, you could put a bench at the end of the bed and a lounge chair in the corner with a foot rest. Add a floor lamp for great task lighting for reading or whatever else you choose to do there.
Layered bedding

No matter how you layout your bedroom always get quality bedding. Try to layer your bedding as well. Layering different textures will look and feel luxurious. My favorite ideas are a subtle patterned sheet with a cream comforter with an accent color or texture in a blanket and only two to four pillows with shams and one accent pillow.
Create drop zones

When you come home from a long day at work, you want to get your pajamas on and have a snack. So, create a drop zones for various items like a chair, hamper, or jewelry tray to keep your room organized and functioning well.
Ideally, you’ll have a closet entry close to the bedroom or bathroom entrances. So you can have the hamper, shoes, and clothing storage close by to quickly put clothes away. But, choose to organize it in ways it will work best for you. Maybe you want your hamper near the door or shoe storage downstairs in the entryway.
A lighting plan

If you don’t have overhead lighting in a bedroom that’s okay. You’ll need five to seven lamps around the room for general or ambient lighting. Put all the lights on dimmers or choose 3-way lamps and place them around the room so you get the most light bouncing around the rooms without causing deep shadows.
If you have overhead lighting, make sure you also have lamps because we don’t always want maximum lights in out bedroom. It’s a bonus if you can have a large ceiling light and accent lighting in a wardrobe or on the ceiling.
Install window treatments

Any kind of drapery can add a luxurious feel. Add blackout for privacy or sheers to help wake you up with a nice dose of sunlight in the morning. But if your bed is right next to the windows making no room for drapery, don’t do any drapery but instead add some shades; wood or fabric shades look nice, but go neutral here; it will look great for many years.
