Winter is almost here! And that means it’s the cozy season. It will soon be freezing, and it’s time to spend more of our life indoors (although I encourage you to get out in the cold weather), so let’s give your space a new life, reinvigorate ourselves, and make your home cozy!
So, I know what you’re thinking: I am not redecorating my whole house this close to the holidays, and I agree with you. Social media has caused people to scurry to redecorate week after week. But what if you do want to still enjoy the seasonal cheer but don’t want to keep the holiday decor up?
Create a color palette

We all think of white or ice blue for winter decor, and while that’s a beautiful look, try to go for something more unique, like forest green, jade, navy, rust, plum, and deep magenta. These colors look amazing with the typical winter colors and definitely make your home cozy.
Let there be light

It gets so dark in the winter months so you’ll want as much light as possible. Add many unscented candles to get a cozy ambiance without overwhelming your home with too many smells. Use pine shaped candlesticks, amber votives, and large and small candles to add dim light to the space.
I’m a big fan of tea lights; they are so cheap, and you can put them in almost everything. For even more coziness, get some marble candle holders; the light will glow even during the minimal daylight hours we have.
Create winter garland

One of my favorite things to do is make a winter garland. Take all the bows and bells off your garland after Christmas and replace them with pine cones and winter berries from the yard or make a citrus garland with pine or rosemary and lights for a warmer look. You could also so a minimal look with just the pine branches.
Keep the tree

Keep the Christmas tree up but take the ornaments off. The warm lights create a nice ambiance and you could keep it bare or add some pearls, pinecones and winter birds or aforementioned citrus garland. You might feel like it will be too christmassy but it won’t, it will look rustic and charming.
Luscious blankets

I mean, yeah. Get plush, quilted, or super soft blankets. Choose faux fur, cotton, alpaca or velvet. Not only will they feel luxurious, but they’ll also look luxurious. If you have some holiday blankets, like buffalo check or dark reds keep those out for the winter as well and really any luscious blanket makes a home cozy.
Scent

Of course, you can always do scented candles; my favorites are spiced pumpkin, sandalwood, and tobacco flower, but you could also do something more natural and homemade. Boil some water on the stove and add orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, juniper berries, rosemary, and vanilla. This will fill your home with spiced sweetness and get the vibes going.
Change the decor

Only if you need it! I’m not advocating to redecorate the house every season, but sometimes things get worn, and it’s time for something new. And sometimes winter gets monotonous and it’s fun to get something different.
Remove anything that is overtly holiday decor. Choose mostly colors you can see out your back door and use those patterns for fabric or decor items. Black subtle patterns, etched white ceramics, deep reds, evergreen, rustic charcoal and ice blue.
Update the rugs

If you need a new rug, consider this the perfect time to get a new one. Go for colors that will look good all year and be a perfect backdrop for fall and winter. Bring in some ochers, greens, reds, blues or neutrals. If you go for a neutral rug, select one with some texture, it looks cozy all year round.
Do some crafts

I love all things handmade. Go for something other than the 5-minute crafts or something that requires many supplies. Make things you are passionate about or like doing with the kids.
Make some garland from plants in the yard, floral arrangements, or go for a paper snowflake to hang on the windows. Just ensure it’s something you want to do, and do not break the bank. These items should be unique for those we make them with and those we pass them on.
