Unfortunately, we are running out of stores to go shopping for a quick trip to get a pillow or frame and really there’s only a few store left, Home Goods in particular, where you can do that and not break the bank. And how nice is it to escape from the home for a bit to find a nice candle.
I know I say not to shop at Home Goods but honestly not that I am being snobby designer, I just think their quality and variety of items has gone down in the past few years. But, there are things I will still buy there.
Pillows

Honestly, Home Goods has excellent pillows. You can find them organized by color, pattern, and style. They usually have a large selection; you can go there anytime and find great pillows. I’ve found some beautiful neural patterns that pair nicely with a more colorful or textured pillow. Often I even find quality pillows in a specific color my client really wants for their living room.
Kitchenware

Home Goods has great kitchenware, wooden spoons, glassware, coasters, bowls, cutting boards, and cookware. I frequently find bowls that can be used for a variety of things and aren’t your huge Pyrex bowls. They are perfect for making a salad, mix up some tuna for lunch, or make a nice dip. So you can find just about anything specific for your kitchen.
Throws

I am always cold, so I love to stop by and get some throws from Home Goods. They have many nice options, faux fur, different colors, and sizes. I can often find a color I am trying to layer into a room, which is always nice not to have to hunt for something like that. Also, I love to see and feel throws before I buy them, so I don’t usually try to buy them online.
Lamps

I used to find the best lamps there but lately not so much. Sometimes, you can still find a good lamp. Something modern or organic is always nice, and 3-way is a must. However, I have found some great lamps in a pinch for a client. They decided they wanted another lamp at the last minute, and I’ve been lucky on my trips to Home Goods. I’m a fan of the number of oversized lamps, too, but I wish they had some smaller lamps for tables, bookcases, and kitchens because I am always looking for ways to create a versatile lighting plan.
Accessories

I typically find modern, sleek-looking frames perfect for photography and gallery walls. I only want to pay a little for a frame off the shelf, and I can find what I need at Home Goods or at Target. But, sometimes, I’m looking for a more unique frame and can’t find anything, so I usually go to some antique stores for that.
I can always rely on Home Goods for marble bookends, baskets and trays. These are at the perfect price point and I frankly don’t recommend spending a ton of money on these items. I love using small frames for artwork or photography and baskets or trays are perfect for a catchall.
Don’t buy
I won’t buy artwork, furniture, and decor at Home Goods. I understand if people are looking for art and decor for their home and maybe a tiny chair for their living room. And we can’t deny that their prices are reasonable. But, having been a designer for a decade, I see how poor the quality is and how easily their furniture breaks, and there are just better places to find inexpensive furniture and decor. The decor like ceramics and wall decor simply doesn’t look good.
As for art, I’ve often purchased handmade art from Instagram for the same price as Home Goods. And yeah, it ends up being more money because I have to get it framed, but I like being able to get it framed the way I would like.
