Some of us have cramped, dark, and messy entryways. In my many years as a designer, visiting client homes over and over, I’ve seen my share of lackluster entries. The best thing you can do to alleviate the chaos is to create a charming entryway.
And unfortunately, homes are not built with the best entryways, so many of us have to work with what we’ve got. Here are a few tips that may alleviate this pain point in your home and make it charming and functional.
Keep it clear of excess
This seems obvious, but for some homes with a small entryway and no closet, we tend to pile items there because it’s close. But I would keep a purse, coat, and pair of shoes there, and that’s it.
Add lots of storage if you have a garage or side entry and at front entry so you have some options. Add cubbies for shoes, lots of hooks, places for mittens and hats, anywhere you can. Keeping the space clear is a major step to a charming entryway.
Create a hanging space

If you have the space for a built-in, go for it. But if you don’t, you’ll need some storage. Simply add hooks, about 5-7 directly on the wall. Pick a finish and style that works best with your home that way you can keep the place tidy.
Install molding

If you have an extremely tight entryway, install molding on the wall. You could add molding to the full height of the wall or do a chair rail. Paint it with a durable semi-gloss paint. Therefore, it will protect the walls and be resilient against scuffs, scratches, and it adds some charming decor to the entryway without taking up space.
Create Storage solutions

Some of us have a stairwell right in the entryway. Consider creating a storage system under the stairs. Add three drawers for hats, gloves, and anything else, plus a mail slot and key hooks to keep the space organized.
Place rugs and runners

Adding a rug at the front door or a runner down the hallway can instantly create a textured look that feels cozy and charming. Ensure it’s easy to clean and coordinates with the other colors in the room or house.
Paint the ceiling
I know it’s scary to paint a ceiling something other than ceiling white, but take the risk; it pays off in the end. If you painted your entryway a creamy white, take it up to the ceiling. It’s an easy way to make the space feel bigger. If you’ve decided on a bolder color for the hallway, I would still take it up to the ceiling; it will make the entryway feel charming, especially if you pair it with a ceiling light that looks gorgeous.
Add light fixtures

Always go for a beautiful light fixture; use a semi-flush mount or a pendant to draw attention upwards. Use brass, black, or silver, whichever pops off the ceiling color. For example, if you painted the walls and ceiling a deep forest green, choose a brass light fixture to create a warm contrast.
Update door hardware

Door handles can be a subtle way to indicate that your home has been updated or taken care of. Vintage hardware can have an indefinable quality; they’re crafted well and have a certain charm.
If you’re fortunate to have old brass or silver hardware, consider cleaning it if it’s covered in dirt and grime to bring it to life. Or upgrade your hardware if it’s a builder-grade because no one ever said builder-grade products are cozy or charming.
Apply wallpaper

Whether it’s modern or traditional, wallpaper definitely adds charm. It can be dark and moody or light and airy; either way, it envelops you when you walk in the door. It can transform a space like a woodland forest or a beautiful piece of abstract art.
If you can’t decided between adding molding and wallpaper do both! Install a chair rail height molding with wallpaper above. Choose a contrasting paint color or pick a color in the wallpaper for the molding paint.
Place furniture

If you’re lucky enough to have a large space that can fit furniture, this is one of the best ways to add a little something extra. Storage or a bench with cute pillows can help the entryway feel more inviting and lived-in.
Hang artwork
It can be hard to add artwork in an entryway; there’s usually not enough wall space. The best options are black and white photographs down the hallway or similar art subjects. The goal is to create an almost art gallery appearance without overwhelming it.
One of my favorite things to do is add small pieces of art. They are cute and exciting. These little pieces pull you in; you have to get closer to them to see what they are, and there’s something charming about that.
